Make sure you have a good legal advisor

Published on 2nd August 2020

If you are serious about buying a property in Tenerife you need to get a legal advisor to make sure that everything is done properly. For a relatively small fee, they will protect you from making potentially very expensive mistakes.

Oddly enough this is something that many people shy away from and think that they can do it all alone but believe me, you need to appoint a legal adviser whenever you buy a property. After all you would always use on in your own country, wouldn’t you?

Ask your agent for to arrange a meeting with a reputable and independent legal representative that speaks your language. When dealing with legal matters it is important that you understand what people are saying and that you can ask questions and get answers that you are clear about.

It is important that you appoint a legal adviser that is independent to the estate agency. You may well find that if they are employed by the agency that they will be working more for their interests and not yours.

Before your meeting with them, take time to sit down and make a list of all the things that you want to know about with regards to legal matters. You may want to ask them about the following:

  • What services do they offer.
  • How much will they charge you.
  • Will they be with you at the signing.
  • Will they be translating for you.
  • Do they have an office
  • Do you need a will
  • Which is the best way to purchase the property
  • Will they sort out your taxes
  • Will they organize all the utility bills

These are only a few questions that are frequently asked and it is important that you prepare one that is relevant to you.

Make sure that you have good rapport with your legal adviser and that you feel comfortable working with them. If you don’t feel that you can trust them or work with them, ask to see another one. After all you will be working together and you need to be able to understand one another.

We could go on and on about this subject but the number one rule is GET A LEGAL ADVISER to help you with the purchase. The majority of the so-called nightmare stories that we have come across are from people that tried to cut costs by not having one.
